Navigation of Publicly funded care services
Navigation of Publicly Funded Care Services
Accessing healthcare services in Ontario and across Canada can feel overwhelming. Families often find themselves asking: What services are covered? Who qualifies? How do public services work alongside private care? At Memories+ Home Healthcare, we understand how complex these questions can be. That is why our team is dedicated to helping clients navigate publicly funded care with confidence and clarity.
Many of our clients already receive publicly funded care through Ontario Health at Home (OHaH). Others may not yet be accessing these supports, even though they may qualify for assistance through provincial programs. Our case managers work closely with OHaH coordinators and other providers to ensure our clients receive all the benefits available to them, while seamlessly integrating our private services into their care plans.
Understanding Publicly Funded Home Care in Ontario
Ontario Health at Home (OHaH) is a publicly-funded program that provides access to home and community-based services. Depending on your health, age, and location, you may be eligible for supports such as:
- Nursing care in the home.
- Personal support services, such as help with bathing and dressing.
- Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy.
- Access to respite care for families and caregivers.
- Medical equipment and supplies.
Eligibility is determined by a care coordinator, who assesses needs and creates a government-funded care plan.
Benefits of Combining Public and Private Care
Holistic Care
Combining public and private services ensures that every area of need—medical, emotional, and personal—is addressed without gaps.
Greater Flexibility
Publicly funded care may provide essential services, but private care offers flexibility in scheduling, consistency of caregivers, and personalized attention.
Cost-Effectiveness
By using public funding where possible and supplementing with private care only as needed, families can manage costs more effectively while ensuring comprehensive care.
Communication with Healthcare Professionals
Case managers consistently liaise with your healthcare team—doctors, therapists, social workers, and community service providers—to align strategies, track progress, and modify care plans as necessary. This promotes continuity, coordination, and quality of care.
How Memories+ Supports Your Journey
Publicly funded services are incredibly valuable, but they can be limited by eligibility criteria, waitlists, and available hours. At Memories+, our role is to bridge the gap—ensuring you receive the full spectrum of care you need.
- Collaboration with OHaH — We work directly with OHaH coordinators to align your care plan and fill any service gaps.
- Complementing public care with private services — If OHaH provides only a few hours of support per week, our team can step in with additional hours or services so your needs are fully met.
Education and advocacy — We help clients and families understand what services are available and how to apply for them.
Family Managed Care (FMC)
For some families, the Family Managed Care (FMC) program offers even greater flexibility. FMC allows families to directly manage their own government-funded care dollars. Instead of receiving services arranged by OHaH, families can hire their own care providers and handle the administrative tasks themselves.
Our team can help you navigate the FMC program by:
- Explaining eligibility requirements and the application process.
- Supporting you in developing a care plan that balances FMC services with private care.
- Offering administrative guidance or directing you to specialists who can manage the details on your behalf.
